04/30/2004 Entry: "late and sorry"
So I have yet again lapsed on my blogging, big surprise to you I know. I am sorry. I have no excuse. I will try to rectify by getting you somewhat caught up.
I went to New Mexico, Santa Ana Pueblo to be precise, about ten minutes from Albuquerque. It was a beautiful hotel/ spa in the shadow of a mountain. It is ridiculous out there. The sky seems to swallow up doubt. I was gathered with some of the other educators and administrators involved in the Enlace program. ENgaging LAtino Communities for Education, ENLACE. It was so great to talk with and share ideas about after school education. There were a lot of discussions over wine and cocktails and a lot of the older administrators let down their guard and started talking about all of the stuff they did in the Latino and civil rights movements in the sixties. They were real important in the struggle, many of them having ties to Cesar Chavez and Huey Newton, man it was impressive. It made me feel really proud, as they pointed to me and said that I and the other younger educators were carrying on the struggle. They kept saying they used to have hair as long as mine. I think some of them missed not being accountable to administrator duties. I met a lot of great people and earned a place on a lot of different couches, even got to kick a drunken poem or two. It was a lot of fun. It was a four day event and I didn't get to use the spa once, but it was fine, some other day.
On a different note: I was thinking about buying a house out there and maybe renting it as a writers retreat. Then I'll get to use it as a vacation spot. I'll have to research a bit.
When I was there I received a phone call from Sarah from UNIDAD at Sarah Lawrence, they wanted me to be a panelist reader at the Latino Artists Symposium. I'll tell you more about that tomorrow
