10/11/2004 Entry: "October 11, columbus day."
There is much to say today. An update I suppose is in order. Much of my time has been taken over by work lately. I am still trying to get everything coordinated within the schools, which isn't so easy with all of the changes going on in the public school system. Hopefully though I have everything worked out now and next week everything will be set. That's work.
Now yesterday I went to see Morrissey at Radio City Music Hall. For those of you that may not know who he is: he was the lead singer of "the Smiths" and has had many solo albums. He is always sarcastic, a little self deprecating, tragic, political and utterly fantastic. I was so overjoyed at seeing him perform yesterday. He was funny and dynamic and played both old songs from the Smiths and the songs off his new album,"you are the quarry", probably one of his best albums to date. The crowd was a little bit older than Jeannie and I, kind of like the crowd at the U2 concert. The crowd was kept in check by the Radio city music hall people. They kept everything on lock. There was no rushing too the front like in other venues, which is something I always try to do. This time we had to stay in our seats, but that's ok because we were only 20 rows back in the orchestra section. Close enough to clearly see his facial expressions, but not to catch the stuff he threw off stage. He was amazing. His voice has not changed at all. I think its because he is vegan so the dairy doesn't mess up his voice. I had a friend who sang opera who was always trying to kick dairy for that same reason. But it was just amazing yesterday. He performed for about an hour and a half, then came out and did one song in the encore, which I think was cut short because so many people in the orchestra pit were climbing up on stage. Four of them jumped on Morrissey towards the end. the funny thing is the orchestra pit was filled with media and special tickets, and not sold to the public. After the song was done he said thanks and walked off, saying something about the security. All in all though it was great. Even the opening act was great. This guy named Damien Dempsey, who is on Morrissey's record label. He is an Irish balladeer in the purest sense. His voice is like a bell, clear and resounding. The songs are sincere and political. He is sad, but defiant. A lot of the songs are positive in hopeful while calling up a lot of the suffering of the Irish people in Europe and in the US. I highly recommend it and am very glad that I heard him and bought his album. At the end of this I will put a song of his as the song of the day . Take a listen. Just click on song of the day at the top of the page.
In other news today is Columbus day. It is also Hispanic Heritage month. Hmmm. How should I say this? Ok i'll just say it. I hate all of those Italian American's who are trying to say Columbus day is a day of Italian pride. It's like the German community celebrating Hitler day as germanic pride day. Don't think they're similar? Maybe it's not exactly the same but they are both Murderers and should not be glorified. Every respected archeologist and historian agrees that Columbus did not discover India, or "the new world". Forget for a moment that you can not discover a place with inhabitants already living there, he as not the first from the european continent to "discover" North America, the vikings from Norway were about two hundred years prior. The first place he went to was Hispaniola, modern day Dominican Republic and Haiti. There he killed many of the natives and led to the eventual destruction of millions in the Caribbean and arguably tens of millions on the mainland. All for spices? I hate him, hate his house in DR, hate his legacy and legend. F... gerard depardieu too. F... all those bastards who were out to make a buck at the expense of innocent people, modern day conquistadors like Dick cheney and George Bush too. I Hate today and would like the record to be corrected.
I don't want to talk about it anymore.
Saw "Shaun of the Dead" it was hilarious. The characters were perfect. I especially liked "ED". I though the ending was a bit sad, but had a funny epilogue. I would highly recommend it. It was pretty scary at times too, actually more tense than scary. Very worth while.
Song of the day is "Negative Vibes" by Damien Dempsey's album Seize the Day. take a listen, click at the top.
