Saturday, Aug 24 2003.
When to Ishle's "seven saturday's" at the Bowery to see Evert Eden, Alex Chee, Staceyann Chin, and Doria Roberts. It was a great set of performances. Each one moving the audience in a different way. Really glad Ishle is doing that reading series, its really been a great set of shows.
Afterwards we went to go eat at republic in Union Square, with Nancy, Alex, Pimpila, Ishle and Jeannie. Alex chipped his tooth on a bone in the pork. So be careful if you decide to go there.
Later we went to Alex's beautiful apartment over looking the empire state building and third avenue. WOW. We left there to go to Joey's birthday party and had a few drinks there, it was cool. Happy Birthday Joey!
We split up and Jeannie, Nancy and I, went to Nancy's roof to talk and eat chips and salsa. The view there was amazing too. We stayed up there talking until almost five in the morning. I am squeezing all the fun out of summer that I can. Yaay!

So the Bjork concert was probably the best thing I've seen all summer. We got there early because it was general admission seating. So we were two people back from the stage(great seats). The second opening act (cigar rose) was amazing, don't ask about the first one. Then at around 9:30 Bjork comes out with her eight piece string section, her harp player and two keyboard and computer guys, while fireworks are going off behind the stage(yeah, fireworks). She did almost all the hits, vespertine stuff, selma song stuff, older stuff, she even did human behavior for the encore. She had amazing pyro technics during many of the songs, especially the dance remixes(oh, yeah). Big flames shooting out of like twenty things on stage, and fireworks on cue, crazy light show. It was so great. She was like a rock star of the seventies with all the glam stuff going on. For the finale flames, a shower of sparks on the back of the stage, fireworks, and two trees made of spinning fireworks stations. It was fucking unbelievable, and even though I wouldn't have thought her songs called for pyro technics, it went pefect. What a fantastic show. Afterwards I went on the cyclone for the first time in my life, it was non stop no time to catch your breath. I had such a good day. Good night sleepy head.

Its wed the 20th, Do you know where your summer is, my bet is that it is in my house cooking me to death. Can my hair get any frizzier? (chandler moment) Today I did some video editing work for Rob Neill. We put together a promo tape for him. I think it came out really well. Put them on Cd as well. Isn't technology amazing.
The Gijoe's I ordered through E-bay came today. I feel so ashamed. This is probably the nerdiest thing I have done in weeks, really. Got a good deal though, so I will probably do it again. I have some trouble reconciling my anti war stance and my love of 3 and 3/4 inch action figures. I have been so brainwashed I can't help it. I can't figure out why they make me so happy, I don't think I thought this much about them when I was a kid. It's not because I was happier then, because I know I am happier now than as a kid. There is something seriously wrong with me. Even now I am hoping that I will be able to find the very rare Uss Flagg aircraft carrier for dirt cheap (not gonna happen, it was $99.97 in Toys R Us circa 1987, and there is no way I'm paying that much now). How cruel is life that now that I can afford toys, I am not supposed to play with them?

The Radiohead concert on Monday was the shiznit. Two hours of songs by Radiohead, almost the entire new album was played, plus material from every album before it. It was a medium size venue in Camden NJ. It was definetely worth the trip down. I went with Omar who lives near by in Philly. Thom did two encores, then finished off with "everything in its right place". It was a really great concert, and a really great dinner afterwards too. Thanks to Omar for letting me stay at his place for the night. Yaaay!! I can't believe I am going to see Radiohead and Bjork in the same week. Damn, life is good. Can't wait till Bjork on Friday. Cyclone stadium is pretty small too. Ohh man its gonna be good. Have to sleep, and dream of other such wonderousness now. Good night.

I still have not finished telling you about Nationals. Were up to Saturday. I'm only going to tell you the things that I enjoyed so this will be short. The Nerd Slam was fantasmic. Room full of nerds, and Geeks in Quimby's book store sharing their nerd pain and their nerd triumph, it was the nerdiest(meaning best). Quimby's was such a great place to do it too. They have such cool stuff, chapbooks and rare comics. I'm gonna go there whenever I'm in Chicago. Had a good convo with Cristin at Quimby's. She has such a great perspective and calm about everything, plus she's super talented. Yaaay!!!
Finals was the worst show I have ever seen at such a large venue. Mostly I think it was the hosting, although there were feelings of grumpiness at everything from the price, to the assigned seats, to the ferris wheel outside. LA won with some interesting stage work and some variety which really set them apart that night. Ook I need to say this: Marc Smith should stay behind the scenes from now on. He wanted to be the great and powerful OZ but came out looking like an old crazy inventor. I think Taylor Malishould run for NPS president, even though the position isn't open for elections. I think he has the organizational skill, the obsessive compulsivness, as well as the business savy to really turn NPS around. But I'm sure people will be against it. Haters!!! Anyway, thats enough of that.
The following Saturday (two days ago) I had a feature for Ishle's "Seven Saturday's" at the Bowery Poetry Club. I was the first feature. It was alright although the audience was not very responsive, although they were attentive. Got good responses afterwards, but during the feature I was a little uncomfortable. Audience is very important to my performance, I'm one of those people who can't just go on automatic. But after me Lara Stapelton, Chia Ti Chiu read great pieces but got small reponses. Florence Yoo was the musical guest of the night. She had to do a short set, but she was amazing. So quirky and funny, it was very hot to see her perfrom, even if it was only two pieces. Yaaay!!!!
So, Sunday, I did some work from home, and today Monday I am going to the Radiohead concert in Camden NJ with Omar. YAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!Radiohead!!!!!! I always miss them or am unable to get tickets so I am very excited!!!!! Yaaaaayyaaaayyy!!!!!

8-15-03 Ok, So i'm taking a break from describing nationals to log a little bit about the black out that happened yesterday. It was odd, i felt like something bad was going to happen, but it didn't. Thank God I was working from home that day. Didn't have to walk three and four hours like many people. I was in the middle of baking a cake for Jeannie to take to a dinner party. I had just come back from the supermarket when the lights went out, didn't even know it was a big deal. I figured it would come right back so I started making the batter in anticipation of the oven being usable soon. I still have the batter uncooked, lucky it was a vegan cake so no dairy or eggs, maybe I'll bake it later.
I was worried since Jeannie was in Manhattan. I had a meat cleaver with me for a bit.(it was starting to get dark) I put it away after a while.
All the kids on my block were loving it. Skipping and playing ball, riding bikes over and over for the captive audience of adults trying to cool themselves on their stoops. Even after it got dark kids played hide and go seek and cops and robbers with flashlights. People form different buildings got together to barbecue all of their meat before it went bad. Everyone was talking and drinking like some village that has always been this way. I'm glad I live in Astoria.
I went up to the roof to look at the stars. I could see them better but there was some glare by that time from some parts of Brooklyn and New Jersey that had power. The skyline was black like an derelict amusement park. The empire state building and the chrysler building dark shadows against a midnight blue sky. It was beautiful, if not a bit disturbing. The moon was a bright orange, and mars was as visible as a nightlite. Moonlight is reeally bright, when there is no other competition. It turned out not so bad.
I'm glad there wasn't that much looting, especially considering what happened in the seventies blackout. The lights came back at 6 am. I was sleeping.
Things I missed the most last night:
1. Light to read by, you need like ten candles just to read.
2. Music, didn't have batteries for my cd player. If I played an instrument I would have been on my stoop playing all night.
3. Communication. I am so interconnected with the world its scary. Couldn't wait for mail to come in order to know if people were ok. Couldn't live any other time but now, I think.

The song of the day is: "Some like it Hot" By Power Station. Click above to listen to it.

Thursday, August 14, 2003

Ok so this is for day 4 of nationals.
So Fri the 8th. Woke up early got an omelet by myself across the street. Went to the end of the group piece workshop to get good seats for the Asian American showcase. All the Latinos in our crew came out to support Omar, Jerome and Lovella (all Filipino/a) The showcase was really well run. No time wasted or big intros, so they were able to get through a lot of poets. It was a really good showcase and Omar in typical Omar fashion was writing his piece just before he went up. It was a great piece about killing Europeans in justified wars (paraphrased). He had the whole audience uncomfortable but loving it, fantastic. Roberto Ascalon from Seattle was great, more on him later. My favorites of the showcase were Robert Karimi, Omar, Roberto, and Anida. Jerome and Lovella were great too. Really tight community.
So then we went downstairs fro the Latino showcase. It started a bit late, had too long an intro period(meaning not everyone got to read) and the segueways were too long as well, but the reading itself was phenomenal. Got to hear so many Latino poets that I had never heard before. I read My Gringo piece (ontology). Got a good reaction to it. There was also something circulating through this room that seemed to make every performance more alive and relevant. It was so hot. Got to hear this great smoking poetry piece from Jerry Mondragon and so many funny and relevant pieces as well as very heartfelt pieces about Celia Cruz and identity. I was so happy to be who I am at that moment.
After we all went to eat at Pasaditas Mexican restaurant which has three restaurants within a block of eachother. Two of them across the street. The food was delicious. Also grew our numbers as This asian american poet from the showcase named Israel joined us. From there went to the semi final bout to see Union Square get beat by .1 of a point to LA, whom they had already beat on Wednesday. Urbana didn't fare much better as they got misunderstood by the judges in a bout with Nuyorican. It sucked. Dreams of 2000 over we tried to go to Indie Finals but couldn't get in. We decided to just drive around find someplace to stop and drink (noticing a pattern) and we had a lot of fun. It was Seve, Fish, Lovella, Angelo(her boyfriend), Rich, Ray, Oscar and Maria. So many funny things got said I can't even recap them (afrodeus, and ass crack pretzels). Oscar got drunker than I have ever seen him. It was kind of my fault since I forget not everyone has my metabolism for alcohol. I will save him the embarassment and leave him out of the rest of this blog although he really deserves to be in here for all the crazy stuff that happened. Anyway after a while we ended up at a yuppie club which none of us liked so we left, except for Ray and Seve(who didn't get back until 1:30 pm). Got back to the hotel with Oscar and stuff. Found out Mike Mcgee won the Indie Finals (first funny poet to ever win indies). I was very happy. Did some poetry in room 2503 at a poetry tag thing. It was cool although I felt like the same people kept going on (isn't that always the way it is). Went to sleep around 5 am.

Wednesday, August 13, 2003

This will count for wed Aug 6 and thurs the 7th. So we got to Chicago on Wed morning from the drive. I wasn't sure where I was going to sleep (big thanks to Oscar and Omar for letting me crash in their room). The intro's were cool as was my introduction to the dancing(sexually active) hamsters from wallgreens. Bar 13 did their intro with their new stage names such as: Smoke the detector, and DJ manbreasts (you should have seen the people's names who were serious). Went to the room took a much needed shower then went to the second of the preliminary bouts at 8:30. Saw the austin, wicker park, greenville bout. It was Ok. Nothing I hadn't seen before. I stayed in the same venue for the Union square, LA, Portland bout. Highlights: Roger did his Trent Lott piece like he channelled spirits. Have to give it to him on that performance.
La's third round piece about commercialism really did interesting things with voice and movement but it didn't score well becasue it was their third group piece of the night.
Portland had this amazingly gutsy deadpan poet named Der Lovett. He has an incredible delivery and really got the attention of a lot of people at nationals. One of my favorites at this years Nats. But of course he didn't score well. So what.
I wanted to see Urbana's second half but the bout was too close to call so I stayed. Union square won at the last minute beating LA. After that went to eat and found out that all of the NYC teams had won their first bout, giving us the hope of a repeat of 2000 finals(all 3 NYC teams in finals). We went to go drink after that but the bars were closing so we went back to the hotel and drank some more. Side note: Tony Brown is cool.

Wake up late the next day. I really wanted to go to Taylor's intermediate perfromance workshop but I didn't get up in time. (Got notes from Oscar later, good stuff.) Caught the latter half of the cover slam which was really positive because it was people paying homage to other poet's work. Complimented this guy that read a Pinero piece, and wound up making a new friend. So Jerome and his friend Lovella joined our group of supporters. We all went to eat lunch together. It was a big group of Filatino because everyone was either Latino/a or Filipino/a. We rolled like ten deep into this cheap eats spot and had our own comedy show in their. The jokes lasted for an hour and everyone was dying of laughter. We then went to the end of the Native American Showcase which was cool but a little bit wierd because of the politics of the so called "instant indians" that the MC called out, mostly calling out Brett Axle. Whatever. We left and went to the park to have a cool sit down, real hippy in the park, kind of moment as we sat on the grass and ate any candy that people had in their pockets and bags. Ray played guitar and everyone read or wrote a poem so that we could all get to know each other better.
Left the park adn I got a terrible tasting mamey ice cream (tasted like milk and suger). Went over to Union square's second bout. It was a trouncing over Alaska and Ozarks. This guy from Alaska did this poem dissing Taylor and a bunch of other people without saying anything himself so I hate him now(he tried to film me later, I had to ask him to stop). Half way through Rich, Jerome, Lovella and I went to catch the second half of Urbana's bout. They did amazing group pieces against Portland and Fort Lauderdale. Sean even freestyled. Got to see another brilliant Der Lovett piece cementing my admiration for him. Cristin loved him too so maybe he'll feature at Urbana. I'll post as soon as I know. Had a drink and talked with Jerome and Lovella in this really cool Blues club for a while(it was nice to connect with strangers because of poetry) , then went accross the street to catch the end of Miami's bout. They won, YAAAY. It turns out I knew two people on the team from my days in Miami. I was really happy to reconnect with them, even though they knew me under a different name).
Afterwords had the religious experience of my poetic life. Don't believe me ask Cristin, Rich, Oscar or Sean. It was Hollywood-Vancouver-Nuyorican. The first poet of the night got a 29.7, and it only got better from there. It was something in the room. I can't really explain it except to say that they all deserved the scores they got. It was an amazing set. Everypoet came up and hit a different note. Every poet seemed to leave themselves on stage. I saw all of those poets perform either before or after and they didn't perform the way they did that night. Highlights: Carlos from Nuyo's "what are words worth piece", Barbara from Vancouver's "brothers grim" piece which had half the audience (including me) crying. Damn that was good. Hollywood's black white role reversal piece which could have been bad but really came off beautifully.
Damn there was a lot that happened. Ok long story just a bit shorter. Later More drinking and talking... Good Mexican food, providence rocks...mobs of poets in the streets...Great discussion with Tony Brown and Karen Ladsen in the hallway outside room 2503, that ended at 6:30 in the morning.

because I was not able to web log from Chicago at the Nationals. I am going to make seperate entries for each day. This will serve as Tuesday Aug 5.
I am going to Nationals today. The E-train wasn't running cross town ( I later found out why: It was because the A-train, that Gina and Jamie were on, caught on fire down town so they stopped everything on the blue lines.) I had to carry three heavy bags plus the national Slam trophy across three avenues and down six streets. I wanted to take a cab but no one would stop for me. It may have been because the National Slam trophy is a real sword in a stack of books, and I had it over my shoulder with my hair obscuring the books. So I looked like a guy with a broad sword on Sixth avenuehailing a cab. Anyway, everybody was a bit late getting to the car rental for some of the afore mentioned reasons (fire). It was nearing 8PM. Blah, blah, blah... skip ahead to car trip six of us in the minivan and four in an suv as part of a caravan. We stop at a gas station in rural pennsylvania, at midnight. Everyone jumps out of the van to stretch and buy supplies. I go over to the tan suv that pulled up next to us (the tan suv that Fish was driving) and throw up my hands at the rear passenger window to scare the people in the back. Except that it was the wrong SUV. I scared some poor white girl who was sitting alone in the suv as an unknown and very terrorist looking guy throws his hands on her window and yells boo at midnight in rural pennsylvania. What's worse is that because the windows were tinted. I couldn't really tell that it wasn't someone I knew. I stood there and laughed until I realized this person silently screaming in the car wasn't Fish, or Rich or Lenny or Maria. I felt soooooooooo bad. I scared that poor woman half to death. Everyone one else thought it was funny especially when she told her friends inside what happened and Ray was standing next to them laughing histerically because he already heard it from me. I could have been killed. But i apologisedand stayed out of the convenience store until after she left. After that we spent another fifteen minutes tearing the car apart looking for Seve's sandwich, which eventually turned up on top of a newspaper stand, and Cassie was trying the door of a minivan as though it were ours as the man inside looked at her strangely. It was quite and eventful trip.

08-04-03 Monday:
Ok. I feel bad about something and I have to put it in here. I didn't go to Bar 13 tonight. They had their poet auction, and the team send off. I increasingly feel like I am distancing myself from the collective. It's a little bit sad. I feel like I don't want to hurt the feelings of the people who have really put a lot of thought and sweat into the series, and have been good people too. However, I feel like my time would be better spent doing other things. The CD that I designed and put a lot of time into (and I think is a great CD on its own) continues to sit in boxes in my living room. It is not available on the Poetcd.com website nor on the poetryslam website, nor in any other store location besides the four that I personally dropped it off at.
The National poetry slam starts on wed, and no one outside of a small group of people are even aware that the CD came out. Even some of the people on the CD haven't been officially told about its release. I know what you are thinking: why didn't you do it? Why didn't you make sure it was sold on said sites and in more stores. It comes down to this, I did not want to be the one pushing the expansion of the thing by my self, I don't want to be a nag, and that's what I was becoming. The only sales of the CD so far have been local efforts by Fish, Oscar, and Seve at the merch tables. In all instances they have been point of purchse sales, or close friend referalls. None of them have been because of advertising or email, having heard it somewhere, a review or an article.
Which would be Ok if this were a bottleg home burned thing, but its not. Its a real professionally manufactured and produced CD that could sell itself if people only put a little work into the promotion, and marketing. The Cd release was a flop, and it was two months after we had already been selling it. There isn't even sales info on our website.
All of these things frustrate me. I just can't put on a smile anymore when it comes to the CD, I just have to stop working for it, and let it sink or swim. So tonight I din't feel my presence was necessary, nor would it have been helpful for them or for me to be at 13. I want to go to Nationals with a positve attitude and have some real fun cheering on NYC . I should be able to do that with just a little bit of effort. Sorry to be such a downer but I had to put it somewhere.

Sunday 08-03-03:
Today I had one of the most perfect sundays I have ever had. Woke up and went to Vegetarian Dim Sum house (I know its a terrible affliction) with Jeannie, Mark, Annatha, Adrian, and Pimpila. Then I was supposed to show my brothers girlfriend around town, but she got lost in Queens somewhere and couldn't make it.
So me Jeannie and Mark decided on the fly to go to Coney Island. We took the train down to brighton beach and we walked along the boardwalk to Coney Island. In all my years of living in New York I had never gone to Coney Island, not even when I was little. It was great. There were tons of people. They had a live band playing merengue on the boardwalk. Had fries from the original nathans hotdog's (you know where they have that hotdog eating contest every year). We ate lychees french fries and drank coke, while the wind blew sand into everything. Then we decided we had to at least touch the wate. So we took off our shoes and waded in the surf (brrrr). We walked by the rocks and I remembered that when I was little we used to pick mussles off the rocks in Rockaway beach and then cook them when we got home from the beach (not too healthy, but hey I'm still alive). Then just before we got on the train I bought a caramel apple with nuts (oh yeah).
We took the train to Jeannie's and my old apartment in brooklyn. Its on the edge of Gawanus. The whole neighborhood has changed soooo much. The whole place is being infested by hipsters. It's like a williamsburgh type situation there now. All of the rents in the area have doubled. There is a champagne store one block from us, as well as a wine and cheese shop and boutiques that only sell hipster stuff. Its horrific. I don't know where all of the displaced people will go. Brooklyn has become so overrun by rich kids in second hand clothing. Anyway, we ate at Hunan delight which was one of our favorite restaurants in that neighborhood. They make great fake meat vegetarian dishes. Then we went to Uncle louie G's italian ice place. I had killer kiwi flavor. It was the shiznit. Then we went home where I met up with Cristin O'keefe Aptowicz (Aptowicz.com), to correct some errors things on her chapbook (which looks great, and you should really buy). All in all a pretty damn good day.
Anyway. Check out the song of the day. Just click on the link above this entry. Sleep well.

Sat 8-02-03:
My summer laziness holds no bounds. I got up at 1:30 in the afternoon today. Surfed the interweb (shappy reference) until like 430. Left the house to go to eat at vegetarian dim sum house (for the sixth time this month, its even worser cause I'm going tomorrow too) I love their pan fried noodles. Had a little mix up with Ishle's thing. She had wanted me to feature that day but I couldn't get in contact with her until it was late and by then I wasn't prepared, But it turned out Ok. I'll be featuring at her seven saturdays show on the 16th.
After we ate we went to The BPC for Ishle's reading series. It was really good. I like the format she has adopted.(short open mic two or three short features and cap it with a musical guest) Today's feature was Mariposa and Reggie Cabico. I just want to give my support to Mariposa right now because I know she's been going through stuff lately(don't need to say what it is, just send some love her way) Mariposa was great and so was Reggie. Reggie is always good. I can see why he is so influential on so many in the Asian American poetry scene as well as outside it. The musical act was great(sorry i can't remember her name). Her drummer played a cajon from Peru. I swear it was like having a full drum set in a small box that he sat on. It was incredible. Then we went to Village Mingala on 7th between 2nd and 3rd Ave. The food there is delicious(its burmese food). I didn't eat much because I had eaten a lot at dim sum house, but i had some golden triangles that were really good. There were like ten of us at the table and allthe conversations were cool. Then just as we were getting ready to leave, Reggie shows up and starts singing. It was hilarious.
After dinner we started to go home when I decided to stop by Kims video. Bought three more DVDs.(good thing I can write them off otherwise I'd be screwed. Anyway its late. Good night.

Friday08-01-03

Its already August. What the hell happened? The summer is over and i haven't eaten enough watermelon. I had a home day today. Worked on a lot of computer stuff. I added a song of the day to the journal. Just click on it to hear a song that I am listening to that day, it will change as often as I post to the journal. I really am taking this as an impetus to update things more on the website. We'll see how my resolve goes.

Bought more dvds today. I have been spending way too much on movies lately. I have to stop. But why are there so many good deals popping up all of the sudden. Just got turned onto this place by Shappy and Omar. Entertainment Outlet on 6th nad 14th. I found some good stuff there. Including a two dvd box set of the old Gijoe cartoon(with a lmited edition snake eyes figure). Oh yeah. Pass me a big old plate of happiness. I am livin the dream(parent's nightmare).

Thursday July 31 03.
I spent most of today working on stuff for september, and also looking at my credit report. They had like six things that were not supposed to be on there. F-- the system I'm gonna live off the grid, just like john conner (T3 reference, 6 on a scale of 10). Its gonna take months to fix too. Credit sucks.

Later I went to go pick up my new pen tablet. So now I can draw right onto the computer. Its gonna make photoshop so much easier, as well as Final cut pro stuff. YAAY!! Maybe I'll start taking on more design projects on. Don't know.

Then I went to Urbana. It was cool. They had George go against Dawn for the alternate spot. The highlight was the reading of the other persons pieces. George did Dawn's piece about her resistance to Taylor's pampering among other things. It was hilarious. Dawn is the alternate for Urbana this year (George is going with orange county). They had the auction and I bought two gijoe Karate men that taylor boutght online, with karate spelled with three A's. I guess that was the seventies version of x-treme. They're cool, although I don't know what I am going to do with them I have the gijoe headquarters under my bed that I haven't used once. I feel like Tom Hanks in "Big" when he got bored with video games. aaauwww.

Then I ate at teany (on Rivington between Orchard and Ludlow)with Jeannie, Anantha and Adrian. They have good sandwiches and tea. I had a goatcheese with olive and tomato. It wa delicious, mmm, good in the rain. I'm gonna start packing for Nationals, I leave on Tuesday night. Wish I had a laptop. Waiting for the new powerbooks. Wish they were out now. Gonna couch surf. Should be a lot of fun.
